as much as ppl complain about rod being genderlocked, the context of mc being a young woman wrt her relationship with her dad and his overprotectiveness and insistence that she be the ‘perfect’ daughter really fucking hits different when you’re an only daughter and and have gone through the exact same thing, and imo a lot of that meaning would have been lost if mc were a guy
